DIGITAL ARTS MUSEUM MADRID

The public displaying of contemporary artwork has become challenging in the context of space, and eventually a bigger challenge when digital methods are used. Vast surfaces for video projections, large areas for art installations and free space for the visitors to experience interactive and virtual artwork are preferable, all of these enhance the abstraction of the artistic content. As a consequence of spatial expansion the experience of art has evolved  into a collective activity. The artistic content may be virtual, abstract and isolated, but the tools that transfer  the content to the observing eye will constitute more and more part of the urban fabric and thus our everyday life.
In the proposed design the street level and its surrounding firewalls are transformed into an urban envelope:  The borders between the building and the street  are erased; the museum building itself is detached from the ground and the neighbouring buildings; the “firewalls” turn into a projection canvas, the street level is accessible to its full extent as a “plaza”. One enters a single holistic space offering  projection screens in all euclidian directions and plenty of spaces for installations. The hovering building is rationalized as a cube, hosting all the necessary components  of the museum; the first three floors reserved for exhibitions topped with an educational floor and a restaurant.
The design seeks a spatial answer to the dense urban fabric. The urban space is expanded over the digital “plaza”. It offers a niche, where the pedestrians can find a sanctuary and explore new perpectives. The contextual relation of the museum to the city of Madrid is further emphasized by the semi-transparent facade of the elevated white cube which functions as a media display during evening hours. It is the pixel of the city, a digital indicator of the pulsating cultural life.
